The Dead Detectives Diary

For a writing challenge in April, Matthew Naqvi has set Terry and the Wordsmiths of Melton a challenge to take a piece of writing and re-write it in the third person. I know I'm just a figment of his imagination, but Terry has asked me to the same thing with my story. Call it what you like he said, just the first page or two, whatever you like. He thinks I don't have enough to do I'm doing year twelve now and time is a precious thing, however I guess a couple of pages wont hurt.
Any way take a look at what I've done to the first pages of his story Toby Farrier.

At ten o'clock, my mates and me, started pushing the desk home from Ramsey’s Auction House on Sydney Road. We were a curiosity to the Saturday morning shoppers who watched us, but I was happy with my choice and didn't care.
Slasher and his cronies waited at the corner of Slater Street. I was determined to push past.
‘Where you reckon you twerps are goin’?’ He said.
Freckles, jealous of Slashers role in the gang was next to chime in, ‘Yeah and what you got here then? Some kind of piano?’ I was ready to attack.
Slasher lifted the dust cover, looked at me and sneered. ‘Old bookworm here has got himself a beat up, old desk. Wouldn't you reckon his mum and dad would buy him a new one?’ He reached out and grabbed me by the shirt. I stepped forward until our noses touched. I smelled cigarettes on his breath, I wanted to choke him, but let him have the rest of his say. ‘But no, that’s right; his parents don’t care about him. Chucked him out, years ago, for being the useless piece of crap he is.’ I felt spittle spray onto my face. We pushed and shaved a bit until I stumbled and crashed into back the desk. Ben and Nathan steadied it as I bounced up again.
The gang saw an opportunity and started to push and shove the boys. Not in a violent way, just enough to let us know they wanted to rumble one day.
I was ready and this time I stepped into Slasher’s space. ‘Tough,’ I said. ‘but if it was just you and me, I wonder how brave you would be if I found you out here on your own?’
He didn't like that. ‘Any time, Creep,’ He said, ‘you just bring it on.’
I put a hand on his chest and pushed past him. ‘Yeah, but we both know, bullies aren’t as tough when the odds are even.’ I said. ‘we've gotta go.’ I poked my finger onto the chest of the spotty one. ‘Better put a hat on, Freckles.’ I said and flashed an insincere grin at him. ‘I’d hate to see you get burnt.’ I said.
‘Rack off, Farrier.’ Freckles said and slapped my hand away.

Slasher must have seen Pop watching from the front gate, ‘Let ‘em pass, fellas.’ He made a sweep with his hand and turned to me. ‘We’ll get ‘em later and when we do, we’ll do them real slow.’
wasn't intimidated.

The gang parted and we pushed past. We rolled trolley up to Pop who waited at the gate until we arrived.

Moolooloo Thomas

This is a poem about an imaginary friend, I found among some pages in old Terry's notebooks, I don't think he'll mind if I share it.

MOOLOOLOO THOMAS

Was that you Henry, did you do that?

Well was it you Millie, did you do that?

Not me said Henry and not Millie too,

Not us, we didn’t do it ------------- really

And no way that it was you!

You know that it is Thomas

When little things get lost

You know that it is Thomas

That’s making our Dad cross

Moolooloo Thomas

Always out of sight

Moolooloo Thomas

When things aren’t right

Come on Millie, you have to go to school

Come on Henry for you it’s Kinder time

Some days mum thinks she will lose her mind

And when things go wrong in school

And then in Kinder when Henry plays the fool

You know that it was Thomas

When little things get lost

You know that it is Thomas

That’s making our Mum cross

Moolooloo Thomas

Always out of sight

Moolooloo Thomas

When things aren’t right

And now the day has past us and we’ve had tea

And as for Thomas, well he has had the blame

For all today’s mistakes and yesterday was the same

Moolooloo Thomas the one we do not see

But like all kids when the day is done

Thomas makes his presence felt, he has one last run

You know that it was Thomas

When little things get lost

You know that it is Thomas

That’s making our Mum & Dad cross

Moolooloo Thomas

He’s always out of sight

Moolooloo Thomas

When things aren’t right

And Henry now is sleeping and Millie’s day is done

Moolooloo Thomas is nowhere to be found

No more of mum’s dishes to be dropped today

No more picking up scattered toys no more noise

But it starts again tomorrow when Thomas is around

You know that it was Thomas

When little things get lost

You know that it is Thomas

That’s making our Mum cross

Moolooloo Thomas

Always out of sight

Moolooloo Thomas

When things aren’t right

You know that it was Thomas

When little things get lost

You know that it is Thomas

That’s making our Mum cross

Moolooloo Thomas

Always out of sight

Moolooloo Thomas

When things aren’t right

For Annie

Terry asked me to put some of my poetry on the blog, Who is it for? I asked, he said to write one for his granddaughter Annie, in England. So Annie, this ones for you.

SIXTEEN

It was a girl

She was sixteen

Her dad’s old guitar

And ripped blue jeans

She strummed old strings

We sang along

It was a boy

He was just fifteen

A red sailing boat

For his summer’s dream

His gaze she held all night

We watched on

It was a boat

As dawn broke golden

And soft white sails

Her name emboldened

Slow waves on morning tide

We did not see

It was new love

On summer breezes

Days just drifted by

Seaweed sand and evening breezes

No one he loved more than she

We saw it all

Arthur Farrier's Ten Lessons for Work

  1. No-one ever got to run the company on the first day of work.
You will have to do many rubbish jobs on your way to success, taking the rubbish out teaches you to distinguish the difference between trash and value.
  1. When you get to the top, take your own trash out.
Show your employees that no job is beneath you. Stops them complaining.
  1. Be prepared to watch, listen and learn.
People have made mistakes on their way to knowledge and they are often glad to show you how to avoid them if you are polite and attentive.
  1. Someone will always say they can do it better.
Maybe they can, ask them to show you; it will save you doing it.
  1. Listen to everything but shop floor gossip.
Only offer an opinion when you truly understand the question.
  1. Read the instructions more than once.
Ask questions of the author until you know what is required. Then proceed.
  1. You are not the only person capable of the job.
Don’t give the boss an opportunity to try someone else.
  1. Don’t kiss arse on your first day.
No-one likes a suck-up and you’ll be kissing up your entire career.
  1. Take your holidays every year.
You will charge your batteries and people might miss you.

  1. Remember when dealing with mail to employ the T.R.A.F. principal.
T = Throw. Discard all junk mail and other rubbish
R = Refer.    Things not intended for you, but for someone else. Pass them on immediately.
A = Action. Do these tasks immediately, only handle them once.
F = File.       File everything now. Again only handle it once.

The World Acording to Arthur Farrier

Ten Lessons for Life

  1. Always be prepared to walk with Kings and talk with paupers.
Often it is hard to tell the difference

  1. To measure joy you must experience pain.
Think about this next time you hit yourself with a hammer

  1. Bread will always fall butter side down, only if it’s buttered.
          Be thankful you have butter

  1. Good friends are hard to find, even when you have money.
True friends will offer theirs when you have none

  1. A cluttered mind is like an untidy room.
Both should be cleaned more than once a week.

  1. There will be times when someone is wrong and you will want to correct them.
Wait, they will find the right answer without ridicule.

  1. No one is truly lost if they have understanding.
Learn to carry and read a map.

  1. Everyone has problems you don’t want to know about.
Why should they listen to yours?

  1. There is a big difference between ignorance and arrogance.
Education will fix ignorance; arrogance, now that’s different.

  1. Remember the golden rule, He who holds the gold makes the rules.
But what will happen when the gold is gone

Toby Farrier : Synopsis, or as I say, what the book's about

Discovery of a dead detective’s journal starts Toby on his quest of teenage discovery. Set in modern Melbourne, he must confront death and betrayal, along the way Toby finds first love, hope, trust, reconciliation and reward.
####

Estranged from his family Toby is an aspiring mystery writer, who lives with his grandfather. Arthur has taught him to control the anger that shattered his family. Toby yearns to regain his father’s trust one day.

A desk, lost since 1929, begins Toby’s adventure. A private detective died while working on the disappearance of a criminal banker and his fortune, the desk was his. Toby’s imagination takes over and he sets out to discover its secrets.

A demented history professor has searched for the desk too. It holds the key to him recovering his family’s position in society. A question from a colleague leads him to Toby and Prof Ryan will do anything to recover it.

Toby’s father is hospitalised after a truck accident and Arthur, hopeful for reconciliation with his family, offers them a place to stay. Turmoil invades the Farrier home and relationships are tested. After an attack in the park Toby and Sophia become more than friends. However, due to family demands on Toby’s time, she feels abandoned and it tests their love.

A chance meeting with palliative patient, Lizard, gives Toby the final clue to his riddle. Deep under the city he discovers a secret entrance to the lost strong room. Ryan consumed by revenge and desire to find his family’s treasure, follows them.

####

Toby Farrier is an action packed adventure filled with acts of renewal, trust, yearning, lost relationships, first love, mateship, stoicism, faith, truth and humility. Hard to put down, this teenage story appeals to a similar readership as JK Rowling’s Harry Potter novels.

Toby Farrier is a heart warming yarn for everyone.

Welcome to my Blog

G'day,

This is a first for me my very own blog. Now of course you know I'm not real, just a figment of old Terry's imagination, but that doesn't mean I can't share an opinion now and then. After all I'll be posting stuff I've learnt about writing here. I 'll let you know about Pop and Charlie. Some of my friends will even get a mention and then I'll let you see a story or two. I've started writing poetry to my girlfriend so some of that might appear too.

Hey if you like what you see drop me a comment now and then. If you don't, let me know that too.

Any way thanks for dropping in,

Tobes
